How are great Leaders different from the rest- Steve Jobs' Theory!

One of the greatest leaders in the Tech industry is the Great Steve Jobs, I know we don’t need to talk much about this Legend, but when it comes to his name and his theories, we need to give him the introduction he deserves!

What do we think of when the name “Steve Jobs” come to our minds? Apple, right? Well, not only was he the co-founder, CEO, and Chairman of Apple Inc., but he also was also recognized as a pioneer of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and the 1980s. This Legend didn’t only participate in creating a massive smart technology, but he also had some great business theories that every businessman should take into consideration while managing their businesses. 

What Differentiates a Great Leader from the rest?! 

This is one of Steve’s theories that we are so thankful for! For every businessman, they should know how to be “Leaders”, not only so, but they should know how to be great ones as well! Here’s what Jobs said about getting promoted from an Employee to being in an authority position, like being a Vice President; 

"When the employee becomes a vice president, he or she must vacate all excuses for failure. A vice president is responsible for any mistakes that happen, and it doesn't matter what you say."

What Jobs meant in this, is that an employee could have an excuse for making mistakes, he’s still an employee, but a vice president or a CEO should not make mistakes, they’re in the position they are to handle the employees mistakes and not vice versa. 

Rossman calls embracing that level of responsibility "owning your dependencies": Taking absolute responsibility for every possible dependency under your purview.

Job’s “No Excuse” Rule of Leadership 

This rule of leadership may be harsh when you hear it out or read it, but when you get to know what Jobs meant with it, you then get to understand why it is reasonable to be applied on Leaders! What he meant here was, out-of-hands circumstances may happen, and others may do things that would lead to your mistakes, BUT, you should never take that as an excuse for making mistakes or failure! It’s YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to always have a back up plan to avoid others’ mistakes! Here’s an example of that case; 

“I dress casually for my flight to Tampa for a speaking gig, the airline makes me check my carry-on bag at the end of the jetway, and then my bag goes to Vegas? I could have packed a back-up set of clothes in my backpack. And I could have worn nicer clothes on the plane. Losing my bag may be the airline's fault... but making sure I have the clothes I need is my responsibility”. 

Being a Great Leader!

Relying on people doesn’t always get you places you hope to be, to be successful you have to work for the best and always plan for the worst. Great Leaders should set their expectations clearly, communicate with their team members, follow up with them, mentor them, train and guide their teams, but most importantly, they should always accept responsibility! 

Taking responsibility should be in success and failure, that what makes a great Leader, if their team succeeded in something under his/ her supervision, he takes the credit, and with failure as well, if the team fails, then he has failed to do the task, cause he’s responsible for that team! 

Summing Job’s "Great Leaders" Theory up! 

Steve Jobs Believe that in order to get something done and succeed in it, you should never waste time hoping or worrying about what might happen, put all your efforts in making this happen! Always be proactive!
